LANCE. 1) WWI PERIOD FRENCH REGIMENTAL FLAG. This 2 ply double sided flag measures 62" x 50" including fringe on 3 sides. Originally, the flag was likely a brilliant red, white & navy blue. It has noticeably faded to a pinkish beige, dull white & medium blue. The flag is surrounded on 3 sides by 2" gold bullion fringe. The gold painted design on the flag features "49" inside a wreath w/ a ribbon in each corner. The center of the flag reads, "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE". There is a typewritten tag on old paper attached to the flag that reads, "FRENCH REGIMENTAL FLAG WHICH WAS FOUND BY H,C, McCAIN 2 DIVISION U.S. MARINE IN A GERMAN BUNKER NEAR BELLEAU WOOD". CONDITION: the flag remains quite sturdy but has noticeably faded. The gold painted design on the flag is 80%+ intact. The metallic fringe is tarnished but nearly complete. The flag shows a few sm. holes & scattered staining/soiling. (02-13495/BF). 2) WWI GERMAN CAVALRY LANCE. A fine example of a Stahlrohrlanze, the classic German cavalry lance of WWI. Iron lance measures 126" in length & the shaft is 1" in diameter. There are 4 eyelets near the point of the lance for attachment of pennants & banners. There is a 19" centrally located leather wrapped grip section w/ 3 brass rings. Prior to 1889, only German Uhlan regiments carried the lance. After Kaiser Wilhelm"s declaration that the lance was the "Queen" of weapons, they were issued to all German cavalry regiments. The lance saw significant use by German cavalry units during WWI & was their primary mounted weapon. CONDITION: lance shows light wear throughout w/ a dark patina to the iron. Grip also shows only light wear. (02-13499/BF). $1,200-1,800.
