Indian Wars U.S. Springfield Model 1873/1877 Trapdoor Saddle Ring Cavalry Carbine, #122370, .45-70 Gov't. cal., 22'' barrel is marked ''V/P/(eagle head)'' at left breech, and fitted with a block-blade front sight and adjustable sliding-leaf rear sight (correctly marked ''C'' for Carbine); trapdoor is marked ''U.S./Model/1873'' below hinge; lockplate is marked ''(spread-wing eagle)'' to left of ''U.S./Springfield'' below breechblock latch; side opposite lock is fitted with a sling bar and ring; standard two-piece triggerguard, buttplate marked ''US'' on top tang with sliding door opening to cleaning rod trap in butt (three-piece rod is present), and single spring-retained barrel band; oil-finished walnut halfstock. Mfg'd ca. 1877-78. Condition is very good, the barrel with a later dark-bluish finish over scattered pitting, the balance of the steel parts a gunmetal gray color with silvered case hardening. Triggerguard and buttplate retain 40%-50% blue with scattered erosion. Stock is solid with the expected marks from age and military use. Action is stout; bore is clean with defined rifling. The ''P'' proofmark is present on stock belly, but the ''ESA'' cartouche of Master Armorer Erskine S. Allin is not visible at left wrist. The Model 1877 improvements included a thicker stock wrist and longer comb, cleaning rod butt trap with hinged door, ''low arch'' breechblock, and others. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (Antique)
