Civil War Burnside Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine, 5th Model, #16481, .54 cal., blued 21'' barrel with a tall blade front and small flip-up leaf rear sights is marked ''Cast Steel 1864'' ahead of the latter; case hardened steel receiver is marked at top of breech ''Burnside's Patent/Model of 1864'' and the serial number; sling bar and ring mounted to left side, extended lockplate and top and bottom tangs; serpentine lever with inside release latch actuates the dropping-block action; oil-stained walnut forend and buttstock having a steel crescent buttplate and sling swivel midway along its belly. Mfg'd ca. 1863-65. Condition is very good to near-fine, the metal parts showing a smooth light gunmetal gray finish and silvered case hardening. Stocks are solid and smooth and retain nice finish and color; two sharp inspectors' cartouches grace the left wrist. The brainchild of famed Union General Ambrose E. Burnside, these 5th Model carbines were issued to many cavalry regiments beginning in 1863; the ''Model of 1864'' marking thus presents an enigma. Action is crisp and smooth; bore is brilliant with defined rifling. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
