Maratha Confederacy, domains of the Peshwas - silver rupee, in the name of Shah Alam II, Pune mint imitating issues of Chakan, letter 'Shri' with Marathi number '9' above on the reverse, not listed in M&W, 11.08g.

Extremely fine, Extremely rare.

In 1803, the Holkar general Yashwant Rao invaded Pune city to avenge for his brother's death at the hands of the Peshwa Baji Rao II. The Peshwa fled and Holkar's irregular armies plundered Pune city. During this time, Yashwant Rao appointed Amrit Rao, the adoptive brother of Baji Rao II, to the office of the Peshwa. At this time, a mint was set up in Pune which struck rupees similar to the 'Shri Sikka' rupees of Chakan, but with a small change in the design: the number '9' was added above 'Shri'. These coins were thus known as 'Nuo Shri Sikka', after 'Nuo/Nau' the Marathi word for number 9. They are one of the rarest Maratha issues with less than five known to survive.
