Antique British Percussion Naval-Style Belt or Boarding Pistol, by Westley Richards, NVSN, approx. 64 cal., 7'' barrel without sights marked ''18'' between two deeply-struck proofmarks at left breech; flat lockplate is marked ''Westley Richards'' below nipple bolster; 4.5'' belt hook is fitted to left side raised apron opposite the lock; brass fittings include a flat ''nosecap,'' one-piece triggerguard, single ferrule retaining the iron hinged ''captive'' button-tip ramrod, and flat oval buttcap; varnished walnut fullstock. Condition is very good. Iron parts show a dark gunmetal-gray with scattered erosion on the barrel, and clear markings; the brass an aged patina. Stock is sound and smooth with scattered age/use marks (mostly around forend area), and nice grain and color. Action is strong and sure; smoothbore is shiny with only minor erosion. Founded in Birmingham, England in 1812, Westley Richards became a premier London gunmaker, earning a number of patents and royal warrants for his innovations in firearms.
