WW2 JAPANESE BATTLESHIP TYPE BINOCULARS.
Giant binoculars were used in lg. numbers on Japanese naval vessels. Internet research indicates production numbers are not known but diagrams of Japanese naval vessels show a cruiser sized ship might have as many as 12-14 giant binoculars mounted on the deck. Binocular marking plate information includes “NIKKO” & Japanese characters, “15 X 4 / NO. 9 / JES” w/ more characters. Nikko, along w/ Toko, produced the largest number of lg. military binoculars in Japan during WW2. The US giant binoculars used during WW2 are said to be mostly directly copied from Japanese models. Binoculars appear to be of brass or alloy cast construction. Eye pieces have individual adj. & eye piece spacing is adj. on left side by worm wheel & has scale marked between “60” & “70” (degrees?). Binoculars have an attractive brown finish. Equipped w/ fold up notch type sights. Approx. 23" overall length & 14" overall width, objectives lenses are approx. 5" in dia., ocular lenses are approx. 1 1/4" in dia. Housing on right side of ocular lens, which appears to have been for a lighting apparatus. Screw cap & components are not present. Binoculars have unusual rectangular mounting bases on right & left side instead of conventional trunions. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: unmarked white canvas dust cover. CONDITION: finish shows light wear w/ flaking, scratching & staining w/ occasional sm. areas of white paint. Optics appear generally clear & serviceable, but individual focusing knobs are difficult to turn. Internal lenses have sm. spots of discoloration. Binoculars have a degree of misalignment.
