This extensive group belonged to First Lieutenant Captain John B. Sandstead. Sandstead was an American pilot serving w/ a British squadron prior to the US declaring war. He subsequently returned to America & was a pilot in the US Air Corps. Besides a voluminous amount of paperwork relating to Sandstead & his service, the group contains his flight bag stenciled "JB SANDSTEAD". / Sheepskin lined American flight boots. / Sheepskin lined British flight boots. / Khaki pith helmet. / Leather British flight gloves. / US dark green captain"s uniform with pin on sterling US pilot wings above a 3 award medal bar that includes Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 3 oak leaves, European Theater medal with 3 bronze stars. Above the right breast pocket is his sew on bullion RAF wings. There are captain"s bars on the shoulders. Left sleeve has 6 service bars. / US Khaki first lieutenant"s uniform with sterling pilot"s wings above 3 award ribbon bar that includes DFC, Air Medal with 1 oak leaf & ETO with 3 bronze stars. Pants included. / Officer"s khaki Ike jacket with sterling pin back pilot wings above a 3 award ribbon bar that includes Air Medal, Purple Heart & ETO with 3 bronze starts. Pants included. / Captain"s dark green Ike jacket with pin on sterling pilot wings above a 2 award ribbon bar that includes Air medal with 3 oak leaves & ETO with 3 bronze stars. Pants included. / Zipper front khaki coveralls with belt. Stenciled Army Air Force on the left sleeve. / Type A4, zipper front, olive drab wool coveralls with belt. / Flight goggles with 1 cracked lens. / 1 Khaki overseas cap with a gold winged, white propeller on round black patch attached to the front. / 2 Officer"s overseas caps. / 4 Pair of khaki socks. / British flight helmet with ear phones, throat mike & cords. / 2 Khaki neck ties. / Zipper front, khaki coveralls with belt. / Wool khaki dress shirt. / Cased Air Medal. / Sterling RAF 1942 badge. / Photo album containing numerous photos of Sandstead & his associates, many with planes. An extremely lg. archive & uniform group belonging to long serving WWII pilot. CONDITION: items generally show light wear w/ no notable damage. Boots show moderate wear. 1 Necktie is quite tattered.
