1840 FLINTLOCK MUSKET. Cal. 69. NSN. Virtually all model 1840s were converted to percussion. Nippes altered most of his still undelivered muskets to a Maynard primer system under his later US contracts. This gun conforms to standard configuration of other 1840’s w/ 42” rnd. bbl. Proofed “U.S. / JM / P” (Inspector Justin Murphy). The bbl. tang is dated 1844. Lock is marked “D. NIPPES / US” under pan & “MILL / CREEK PA / 1844” vertically at tail. Stock has 2 cartouches opposite lock “NWP” (Nahum W. Patch) & “WAT” (William A. Thornton). There is a Roman numeral “XXXVIII” cut vertically on right side of buttstock. Not only is this a very rare gun to find in original unaltered flint, this is also an exemplary specimen. CONDITION: fine to very fine overall, all matching & original. Metal overall is bright in protected areas & has thin varnish coat over most of its surface, which has yellowed w/ some staining & light pitting. Stock is sound & solid w/ sharp edges, good cartouches & scattered sm. cosmetic blemishes. Mechanically crisp w/ clean, smooth bore. (01-17455/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
