MUSKET. Cal. 58. NSN. This is an exemplary example of the last year of production of Civil War musket technically known as a model 1863 Type II. Lock marked w/ eagle, "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" forward of hammer & “1864” on tail. 40" Bbl. rifled w/ three lands & grooves, dated 1864 on top flat, "V P" & eagle head on the left breech flat, bolster has eagle stamped. Stock has two crisp inspector's cartouches & U.S. surcharge on buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: original wood tampion. CONDITION: overall fine to very fine, barrel & mts. are bright gray w/ staining, original & complete w/ correct single leaf rear sight, knurled & slotted ramrod. Lock is smooth & overall gray, hammer retains most of its original case colors. Stock retains some raised grain, crisp cartouches, good edges w/ many sm. storage dings, scratches & dents. Mechanically crisp w/ brilliant shiny mirror like rifled bore. (01-17451/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
