U.S. Model 1817 Flintlock Muzzleloading "Common Rifle", by Nathan Starr, NVSN, .54 cal., pinned 36" round barrel has small open sights and is marked "TCB" and a sunken "P" proof at breech, "1841" on top tang; beveled lockplate is marked "N. Starr & Son" in arch over "U.S." within Starr "(sunburst)" logo over "U.S." under separate brass pan, "Middtn/Conn/1841" vertically at rear; brass furniture consists of fancy trigger guard with scrolled finger-grip at rear, three ferrules retaining the hardwood ramrod, nosecap; iron furniture includes 4.5" hinged oval patchbox, crescent buttplate marked "US" at top screw, serpentine sideplate. Fullstock of American walnut has pronounced "Roman Nose" butt profile. Mfg'd 1841. Condition is good to very good retaining no original finishes, the barrel, patchbox, buttplate and sideplate being deep brown with scattered light erosion (heavier at breech), the lock is gunmetal gray with clear markings at rear but obscured maker's name, logo and "U.S." marking, brass with dark age patina. Stock is basically sound but shows the expected scars and losses from age and long military use including missing wood at top of lock, an 11.75" crack from the front of lock, another 4" crack at left lower ferrule, deep losses at both sides along barrel, and added varnish. Ramrod is a period replacement. Gun has a pinned, rather than 3-band retained, barrel. Lock appears to be original flintlock with correct parts, the touchhole may have been welded, re-drilled and smoothed over, but if so it was also done long ago. Action is crisp, smoothbore shows rather light erosion overall. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. (Antique)
