Thomas Custer led a cavalry unit straight at General Early's war headquarters wagon and supply wagon after a stand-off between Confederation forces and Union Forces. General Early had to leave his headquarters and swim across the South Anna River to get away, leaving everything behind. After overtaking General Early, Tom Custer was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. George Custer gave Tom General Early's personal Spencer rifle found in his belongings after the takeover.
