A music video-used Swift brand Precision-style bass guitar used by Rhydian Dafydd of The Joy Formidable in the official music video for "Whirring" (2011) — one of two identical basses used during filming, this being the surviving instrument (the second was smashed during production as part of the video's visual performance). Acquired directly from The Joy Formidable via a charity eBay auction on December 23, 2021, with proceeds benefiting Turquoise Paw, the band's own animal welfare charity initiative. Accompanied by a well-worn touring hard case with stenciled and painted band identification and extensive touring labels. No serial number present.

Video Documentation

[YouTube] "Whirring" · Official Music Video (The Joy Formidable, 2011)

Historical Context

The Joy Formidable are a Welsh indie rock band formed in 2007, comprising Ritzy Bryan (vocals, guitar), Rhydian Dafydd (bass), and Matt Thomas (drums). Their debut album The Big Roar (2011) received widespread critical acclaim, with "Whirring" becoming one of their most recognized tracks and the subject of their most ambitious music video production to date. At the time of filming, the band were still an emerging act — a context that informs the choice of instrument, as described below.

Music Video Use

This bass was used by Rhydian Dafydd in the filming of the official music video for "Whirring" (2011). Two identical Swift Precision-style bass guitars were used during production — one of which was intentionally smashed as part of the video's performance footage. This instrument is the surviving bass from that production. The band were at an early stage in their career at the time of filming, which is consistent with the use of a budget-range instrument for a video in which destruction of one guitar was planned from the outset.

(indicating prior use as a Fender Precision touring case); a yellow gaffer tape label reading "SPARE BASS"; a fighter jet patch/sticker; multiple FRAGILE shipping labels; barcode routing stickers; and additional touring adhesive markings accumulated across multiple tours. The case condition is itself a document of the band's touring history.

Provenance

Acquired directly from The Joy Formidable via a charity eBay auction held December 23, 2021, with proceeds donated to Turquoise Paw — the band's own animal welfare charity initiative. The band offered this bass alongside two other items in separate listings — a Ritzy Bryan guitar and the original handwritten lyrics to "The Greatest Light Is the Greatest Shade" (both retained by the current owner and not included in this lot). The auction was announced by the band on their official Facebook page, where they wrote: "Ever wanted to get your hands on Rhydian's bass or Ritzy's guitar??? Now you can! Get your bids in before it's too late & let's raise some money for Turquoise Paw!!!" (View The Joy Formidable Facebook Post) The hard shell touring case was subsequently gifted separately by the band. Written correspondence with The Joy Formidable is held by the current owner.
