Historical Context
The Flaming Lips are an American rock band formed in Oklahoma City in 1983, led by Wayne Coyne (vocals, guitar).
"Do You Realize??" was released in 2002 as a single from the album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and became one of the band's most recognized and emotionally resonant works, later designated the official rock song of the state of Oklahoma. The song's music video, directed by Mark Pellington — whose visual work with artists including Pearl Jam and U2 placed him among the most acclaimed music video directors of his generation — was filmed entirely in Las Vegas over two days in July 2002. The video's distinctive visual aesthetic called for a custom all-white guitar as a primary performance prop, which was prepared specifically for the production at Wayne Coyne's request.
Music Video Use
This guitar is seen played prominently by Wayne Coyne in the official music video for "Do You Realize??," filmed at locations in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 18-19, 2002. The instrument was custom finished in white specifically for the production and is visible throughout multiple performance sequences in the video. The guitar's on-screen appearance is confirmed by the Executive Producer's signed Letter of Authenticity, which states the instrument "can be seen prominently in the music video." Following the completion of filming, Wayne Coyne gave the guitar directly to Executive Producer Joseph Uliano, with whom it remained in storage until its sale. Reference photos provided by Uliano at the time of sale further document the instrument's appearance and production context.
Specifications
· Manufacturer: Epiphone (Gibson)
· Model: PR-150-NA/TP (Natural finish; interior label confirmed; Letter of Authenticity references PR-150-NA/IP — a minor clerical variance, with the serial number 02050102 serving as the definitive identifier common to both documents)
· Type: Dreadnought acoustic guitar, 6-string steel string
· Top: Select spruce
· Back & Sides: Mahogany
· Neck: Mahogany, SlipTaper profile
· Fretboard: Rosewood with dot inlays
· Scale Length: 25.5"
· Tuners: Chrome die-cast
· Serial Number: 02050102 (visible on interior label through sound hole; per Epiphone serial dating, indicates manufacture in May 2002 — two months prior to the video shoot)
· Original Finish: Natural (cherry/reddish wood, visible on headstock); custom white surface treatment applied for music video production on July 15, 2002
Condition
The guitar's body has been custom finished in white for the music video production. Based on close examination, the white surface treatment appears to consist of a thick adhesive material cut to the shape of each guitar surface panel and applied directly over the original gloss finish, rather than conventional paint — consistent with a rapid production preparation. This explains the visible "seam" lines at panel edges and overlapping joins, including a jagged overlap line along one side of the body and a seam running vertically down the back. A straight line seam is also visible from the lower bout to the bridge area on the face. Some additional white material or touch-up paint appears to have been applied to the pickguard and the upper portion of the headstock. The original cherry/reddish wood finish is visible on the headstock where the treatment was not applied, and is exposed at the strap pin area where the white surface material has torn back during handling.
Specific condition notes as seen throughout the photographic documentation accompanying this listing:
The white surface treatment exhibits general light wear, dings, and handling marks consistent with production use and subsequent storage. A slight crack in the surface treatment is present along the pickguard seam (partial, not extending all the way around). At the lower strap pin, the white surface material has lifted and torn, exposing the original cherry wood finish beneath. A wood screw has been driven directly into the side of the neck heel to accommodate a guitar strap — a production modification that bypasses a standard strap button installation. The original white canvas guitar strap remains attached. Strings are present.
Included Items
Signed Letter of Authenticity. All Access tour laminate. Contemporary vinyl album sleeve (used) for Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (The Flaming Lips, 2002).
Provenance
Acquired directly from Joseph Uliano — Executive Producer of the "Do You Realize??" music video — via Reverb. The guitar was given to Uliano by Wayne Coyne following the completion of filming and remained in Uliano's possession until this sale.
Original Reverb listing statement from Joseph Uliano: "This Epiphone Acoustic was custom painted white for the 'Do You Realize' Music video shoot in Las Vegas in 2005. Wayne Coyne had requested a white guitar for the video, which was painted for him. I was the producer of the music video and Wayne gave the guitar to me after, which I have had in storage ever since. It is definitely a piece of history." Note: The year 2005 as stated in the Reverb listing appears to be an error; the Letter of Authenticity issued by the same seller clearly documents filming dates of July 18-19, 2002, consistent with the song's 2002 release.
Accompanied by a signed Letter of Authenticity from Joseph Uliano, Executive Producer, on Black Label Content letterhead, dated July 15, 2024. The letter states in full:
