[texas] Charles B. Stewart - Signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence (1806-1885) Doctor and druggist who was elected secretary of the Permanent Council on October 11, 1835, and on November 11 was appointed by the General Council as enrollment clerk and secretary to the executive, thus becoming in effect the first Texas secretary of state. He was elected to represent Austin at the Convention of 1836 and on March 2 signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. In 1839 he served on the committee appointed to design a new flag and he is credited with drawing the original draft of the Lone Star flag. Autograph document signed, 7� x 7� in., n.p., 6 Sept. 1871. "Memoranda" regarding 77� acres of land that the widow of Thomas King would like to buy from him. Boldly penned and signed in blue ink. Toned and some foxing, else fine.
