Springfield Model 1795 Flintlock Infantry Musket, Type III, NVSN, .69 cal., 44.75'' barrel with bayonet lug at top behind muzzle retained by three iron bands having rear-mounted springs (top band of double-strap type having an integral blade front sight, middle band with integral stud for sling swivel); flat iron lockplate with integral rounded pan and projecting rear teat, flint cock with straight top-jaw guide, and iron serpentine sideplate held by two screws; one-piece iron triggerguard with integral sling swivel stud at front and long tangs having rounded ends; iron buttplate and button-tip ramrod; oil-stained walnut fullstock with long flutes carved below comb and long pointed carved aprons on either side of lock. Mfg'd 1808-14. Condition is about good. Barrel markings are obscured by smoothed pitting, the balance of the metal showing a smooth dark brown-to-gunmetal color with scattered discoloration; both screw-retained sling swivels are missing (mounting lugs intact); the lockplate with integral pan is without markings, either having been obliterated by cleaning of pitting (lockplate has a bluish color) or by replacement, as the gun appears to have been restored to flintlock from percussion. Touchhole area is smooth as restored showing no expected black powder erosion. Stock is sound showing the normal marks of long military use, an old filled area at top of buttplate tang, and good color. Action functions well; smoothbore is surprisingly bright and clean. Modeled after the French M1863 Charleville musket, the U.S. Model 1795 has the distinction of being the first American musket produced, at the first American armory. Est.: $500-$750. (Antique)
