Satavahanas, lead coin of 'bull' type, attributed to Siri Satakani (c.100-50 BC), Newase-Paithan region, PAIC 2612, 18.33g. Obv: bull with tail curled above the hump, charging to right, small circular symbol above; traces of Brahmi legend Satakanisa above. Rev: a composite symbol of Nandipadas inside a rectangle with arrows at four cardinal points, with more Nandipadas in quadrants.

Very fine, Very rare.

This type of coin was ascribed by Dr. Shobhana Gokhale to represent the Vedic sacrifice of Vrshotsarja where a young bull was ceremoniously let free from agricultural labour. King Satakani performed a number of Vedic sacrifices, as attested by the Naneghat inscription. The symbol on the reverse is unique to this type of coins.
