SUPERIOR QUALITY EARLY WAR CONFEDERATE UNIFORM
FROCK COAT OF CAPTAIN CUTHBERT H. SLOCOMB OF THE WASHINGTON ARTILLERY. A highly finished, Confederate Artillery captain's frock coat from early in the war showing superior tailoring. The double breasted frock coat made for the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, Louisiana, is of extremely fine, steel gray wool broadcloth in a tabby weave. There are 2 rows of 7 Federal staff officer buttons, each measuring 22.5mm on the front of the coat. The buttons are backmarked, "EXTRA * QUALITY *". They are likely of prewar mfg. due to the embargo on northern mfg. goods being sold to the South after hostilities began. The 14 button holes have welts of cloth in the button hole in the French manner, rather than being formed w/ a button hole stitch. The buttons are arranged from top to bottom in descending distance from the center ranging from 4 3/8" to 1 1/2". This arrangement combined w/ 2" darts extending down from the collar & 6 1/2" darts extending up from the waist seam achieves a plastron type look to the front & presents a more finely tailored fitted look. The 2 piece, 1 1/4" standing collar & collar lining are of the same cloth as the frock coat. Red wool broadcloth piping surrounds the collar & extends down the flap front of the dbl. breasted coat. The rear vent & adjacent pocket flaps are also piped in the same red wool broadcloth. There are 4 additional 22.5mm Federal staff buttons at the top and bottom of the 11 1/4" pocket flaps. 3 Horizontal gold braided 1/4" thick bars measuring 2 1/2", 3" and 3 1/2" from top to bottom respectively, are sewn to each of 2 red broadcloth patches measuring 2 1/2" x 3/4". The patches are in turn, sewn to the collar to denote the rank of captain. The frock coat has 1 piece sleeves each measuring 5 3/8" across at the cuff and 9" across at the elbow. Each of the nonfunctional cuffs has three 15mm Federal staff buttons w/ "EXTRA *QUALITY*" backmarks on 5. The center button on the left cuff has a "SUPERIOR *QUALITY*" backmark. The cuffs are pointed using the same red wool broadcloth used as piping on the coat. The galons are made utilizing 3/32" wide, flat gold braid and begin 2 1/2" up from the cuff & extend to a point 15 1/2" up from the cuff. The breast lining is constructed w/ the same material as the coat itself. The padded breast has 4 horizontal rows of hand stitching. The remainder of the body & the skirts are lined w/ a black/green worsted wool mixture. The side panels are padded like the breast. On the left side of the breast is a 5 1/4" wide horizontal slit pocket. The bag of the breast pocket & the tail pockets are constructed of unbleached cotton osnaburg. The sleeves have a plain white cotton shirting lining. The coat measures 18 1/2" up the back & 16 1/2" up the front from the base of the collar to the waist seam. The skirt measures 19 7/8" in the back & 20" in the front from the waist seam down. The back sleeve seam measures 24". The extreme rarity of this finely tailored frock coat is greatly enhanced by the fact that it is paired w/ a jacket for Captain Slocomb likely made at the same time, by the same tailor. The jacket & frock coat are the exact same material w/ the exact same construction & detailing. They survive as possibly the finest known matched set of Confederate uniforms in existence. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Les Jensen authentication letter. CONDITION: overall, this frock coat shows nearly no wear at all on the outside & only light wear to the lining. There is no fading or discoloration at all to the exceptionally fine, steel gray wool broadcloth. There is a tiny area of moth damage the size of a fingernail on the left lower unfinished edge of the skirt & 1 tiny moth hole on the right lower edge. The piping is a brilliant, lively crimson red. Galons are completely intact & show only light tarnish. Like the galons, the bullion captain's collar insignia are 100% intact & only show light tarnish. All buttons are present & have virtually all of their gilded finish intact. All seams are tight. The green/black cotton lining shows visible wear near the top of the skirt. Probably from rubbing during the few times the uniform was worn. The lining has losses at the base of the skirt on the left side. A sm. section measuring approx. 11" x 2 1/2" has been torn away. Sleeve linings show very minor staining. Captain Cuthbert Slocomb's frock coat and its associated jacket, made from the same fabric, represent 2 of the finest condition Confederate uniform coats extant.
