Cal. 7.62 NATO. S# 2268536. Bbl. 24". Selected M1 Garand rifles were converted to match rifles by Air Force Armorers at the USAF Competitive Weapons Shop at Lackland Air Force Base. Consignor states only 15 mfg. in this configuration, making this rifle extremely scarce. Barrel is marked on left side between front sight and front handguard "AFPG" indicating Air Force Premium Grade. Bolt is marked "SA" and additionally electro penciled "7.62MM". Forward end of bolt has been highly polished. Chamber has bushing to convert to shorter NATO cartridge. Barrel has been highly polished when viewed through operating rod slot and is marked "1 SA 5 44" and additionally stamped "7.62" w/out "M" s. Action does not have block for the shorter cartridge. Flush nut rear sight with correct conversion to 1/2 inch windage adjustments. Receiver sight ear polished bright around windage knob. Has National Match marked adjustable aperture rear sight. Front sight assembly number "NM062". Gas cylinder lock marked on right side "M". Single slot gas cylinder lock screw. Stamped trigger guard. Trigger housing and hammer marked "SA". Operating rod marked "SA". Walnut buttstock and rear handguard. Front handguard appears to be hardwood replacement. Stock set is marked with faint boxed eagle Defense acceptance stamp on left side below receiver and encircled "P" proof at bottom of pistol grip. Stock set has added gloss finish. Buttstock marked forward end of right side barrel channel "7 67" and stamped "8536" on left side. Marked in pencil in bottom of barrel channel "6950" and stamped with "2". CONDITION: stock set has light wear and scattered handling marks throughout with areas of small flakes of missing finish notable on rear handguard. Metal has 80% original parkerized finish with light high point wear. Gas cylinder retains most original finish, but area of bayonet lug has missing finish with small dents at bottom. Bayonet lug is also penned slightly at front. Gas cylinder lock has gray coloration. Very good shiny bore w/ sharp lands. (20-12/RW). CURIO. $3,000-5,000
