SERIAL NUMBER 14 BARREL 12 " CALIBER .58 RIFLED BLACK POWDER, MANUFACTURED 1856. Produced with bright steel barrel and rammer and lock and using the Maynard tape prime ignition. Lock is marked "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" and dated 1856 at rear. Barrel is Springfield Eagle head proofed and dated 1856 at tang. Equipped with folding 2 leaf rear sight and steel blade front sight. Brass furniture with steel sling swivels. Designed for use by horse mounted troops with detachable shoulder stock. Light weight and easily carried. The large bore pistol was known to have tremendous recoil and known for cracking and damaging the stocks. Shoulder is stock is matching numbered to pistol and locks solidly in place. Slightly over 4000 of these pistol/ carbines were produced and issued. CONDITION. Good with barrel and lock having toned to a mottled grey mixed with patina. The walnut stocks are very good with a minor shrinkage crack for and aft of lock plate. The brass has toned to a mellow patina. The action operates properly and the Maynard tape prime mechanism is complete and functional. The rear sight has a small chip in the lower blade. These are rarely found with matching numbers nor are they found with functional priming mechanisms. ANTIQUE
