It was sighted at 25 yards using Magnum ammunition using a 6 O’clock hold. On August 26, 1940, a letter was sent to Smith & Wesson from Georgia State Wild Life Ranger Ed. Friend. He asked if a “wart” could be removed near the front sight of his Registered Magnum. He also wanted the barrel replaced with a 4.5” barrel. On September 18, 1940, Smith & Wesson's Fred Miller replied that they would either replace or cut the “bulged” barrel.
