Cal. 54. S# 2898. Bbl. 21". Early model Burnsides are rare & saw hard use. This is an honest survivor of the first Burnsides that utilized forestock of which only 800 were delivered under August 31st, 1861 contract. Lever latch marked "G.P. FOSTER PAT. / APRIL 10TH 1860". Lock marked "BURNSIDE RIFLE CO / PROVIDENCE, RI". Bbl. marked "CAST STEEL 1861". Breech has 2 line patent dates & S# 2898. Matching numbers also found on breech block & bbl. Buttstock has indecipherable carved unit markings. CONDITION: good to very good overall. All matching w/ exception of forestock, which is a modern restoration. Saddle bar lacks ring. The 2 bottom breech screws are replaced. Mechanically, there is no half cock, otherwise functions well. Bore has discernable rifling w/ pitting. Metal overall is a mixed brown patina w/ pitting. Buttstock is sound w/ numerous sm. handling blemishes w/ newer varnish coating. Sm. door over breech adj. screw does not stay closed. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Dan Poppen. (01-17317/JS).
