BREECHLOADING CARBINE. Cal. 50. S# 1681 / 2398. About 2,000 of these Burnsides made w/out forestock were produced 1861-1862. Generally they saw action in the 1st NJ Cavalry, 1st Maine Cav., 1st PA Cav. & 1st US Cav. This gun has seen hard service, but has survived in original complete condition. CONDITION: good overall. Metal is dark, cleaned & pitted though most markings are discernable. Patent markings on top of frame are only partially discernable. Bbl. & frame are S# "1681". Breech block is S# "2398". Stock is sound & solid w/ hand worn patina w/ no visible cartouche. Mechanics need attention, strong discernable rifling & pitted bore. PROVENANCE: Herbert "Bert" Murch Collection. (01-16380/JS).
