PERCUSSION CARBINE. Cal. 50. S# 4498. For a gun that over 5,000 were made, this gun produced in early 1864 is hard to find as most saw hard use in the field. 4th Model improvements made cartridge insertion & withdrawal easier by a dbl. jointed breech action & a easily removable hinge bolt. A defect in the design of the dbl. jointed breech was soon identified. The breech block had first to be rotated forward & then the lever moved upward. Reversing the sequence resulted in dented or dislodged bullets. The problem was solved by the creation of a guide pin in the frame & a groove in the breech block which guided the breech block through the proper sequence making it impossible to utilize incorrectly. The Burnside saw service w/ NJ, Michigan, Indiana, Rhode Island, Ohio, West Virginia, NY, PA & Illinois cavalry regiments. CONDITION: good to very good overall. Complete & original. Metal overall is a mottled brown/gray. Markings all discernable. Stocks are sound & well fit, forestock has numerous dings & dents, buttstock has less. Mechanically functional w/ discernable rifling in bore. PROVENANCE: Herbert "Bert" Murch Collection. (01-16382/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,400-2,900.
