S&S ARMS AMERICAN 180 SMG.
Cal. 22 LR. S# X024. Bbl. 16.5". Originally mfg. & imported from Austria, the earliest American 180 variants were classified as Dealer Samples due to the inability to import transferable machine guns after 1968. E&L mfg. started building a version in the United States & since they were domestic in mfg., these were fully transferable firearms. Research has indicated that approx. 24 examples were mfg. & registered by S&S Arms. It’s interesting to note that this particular gun bears the S# X024, possibly being the last firearm produced. The American 180 is an open bolt, select fire 22 LR buzz saw that feeds from a 176 rd., 3 tiered drum. The cyclic rate is often rumored to be in excess of 2000 RPM & a single burst in a full mag. is completed in only 7 seconds. The sound is as unique as its appearance, compared more to that of a chainsaw than a firearm because of the excessive cyclic rate. The bbl. is finned in a similar style to that of the legendary Thompson w/ a protected blade front sight & an adj. peep rear sight. The forend, pistol grip & shoulder stock are a brown plastic designed to imitate wood aesthetics. Pistol grip is checkered w/ finger grooves. Finish on all exposed metal parts w/ the exception of the natural finished aluminum receiver, is blued or black paint. Left side non reciprocating charging handle. Safety is located on the right side of the receiver. The selector is a cross slide pin. When pushed from left to right, full auto is selected & will continue to fire as long as trigger is held to the rear. When the pin is pushed in from the right, it is an open bolt semi auto action. The unique drum, w/ winding assembly is mounted on the top, above the chamber, forward of the trigger. The ejection port is below the firearm forward of the trigger. Receiver marked on left side w/ name of previous owner tastefully engraved just above ejection port. Right rear markings are "AMERICAN 180" over "X024". Right side receiver markings include "S&S" logo & "S&S ARMS CO."/ "ALBUQUERQUE, NM"/ "U.S.A.". Bbl. marked on top w/ 2 indistinguishable marks, "73" & "AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL CORP"/ "SLC. UTAH USA"/ "A001881". Top of bbl. just rear of front sight marked "MADE IN AUSTRIA". Removable rear stock locks w/ a single pushbutton to the rear of the receiver similar to that of a Thompson SMG. Sling swivels front & rear on left side. MAGS: 2-176 rd. drums w/ 1 winder. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 1 early Aimpoint original red dot sight. Function can’t be confirmed as an old battery appears to be lodged in the carriage. 1 Weaver 63B mount. Original Styrofoam packaging. CONDITION: original finish enjoys full coverage on exposed metal surfaces. No major visible flaws of any type. The only evidence of any use is a minute amount of powder fouling in the feed area. Plastic furniture exhibits only light handling marks, however the rear portion of the shoulder stock leans more towards a matte finish. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand, though a proper modern cleaning may be in order. Both drums appear to have seen little use & both rotate freely. NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT SMG REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. (03-1486/JZ). MODERN CLASS III. $6,000-9,000.
