RFC marked Smith & Wesson Second Model Hand Ejector Double Action Revolver, Canadian Issued, #41253, .455 MK II cal., 6.5'' barrel, blue finish, pencil-marked matching diamond checkered walnut grips with S&W medallions. Birmingham proofmarks and broad arrow ''C'' Canadian issue markings to left side of frame. Backstrap marked ''5-16/48-RFC/64'', which has later been lined out, indicating use by the 48th Squadron of the Royal Flying Corp. The 48th Squadron was posted to France in 1917 and commanded by Keith Park who later was an Air Vice Marshal during the Battle of Britain. The Squadron had 32 Aces serving, besides Park. Shipped Feb. 17, 1916, to Remington Arms-UMC Co., NYC, New York, with factory letter signed by S&W Historian Roy G. Jinks. Condition is fine retaining approx. 92% original factory blue, with thinning and scuffs to finish. Cylinder is tight from dried grease and should clean easily. Grips with moderate wear. Bright bore.
