TO COLONEL PRICE OF MISSOURI. Cal. 36. S# 33644. Bbl. 7 3/8” oct. Top flat is marked "PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858 / E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK. U.S.A. / NEW - MODEL". 6 Shot rnd. cyl. Brass trigger guard. 2 Piece walnut grips. Letter "C" mark is found on left side of trigger guard. Total of approx. 28,000 New Model Navy revolvers were produced 1863-1878. A historic Civil War era revolver associated w/ Colonel James A. Price of Weston, Missouri. Colonel Price was born in 1829 in Bedford County, Virginia. His mother was Nancy Lee, a first cousin of Robert E. Lee. In 1840 he came to Missouri w/ his family. According to provenance supplied w/ the revolver, Price studied dentistry & after completing his schooling opened a practice in Weston, MO. In 1852, he married Russella Warner, a great granddaughter of Daniel Boone. At the war's outbreak, then Captain Price recruited & commanded a unit of 18th Missouri Volunteers that was engaged in a number of battles, most significantly Shiloh. Capt. Price was seriously wounded at Shiloh but remained w/ Grant's army through the Battle of Corinth. Following Corinth, Price was suffering badly from his disability caused by wounds. On July 7th, 1862, Price resigned & returned to Weston, MO. After recovering from his injuries, he responded to the call of the Governor & organized 800 men for the State Militia. He was subsequently made colonel of the regiment. The Missouri State Militia was tasked w/ ridding the country of armed bandits & southern raiders. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: binder containing substantial quantities of information provided by the consignor related to Col. Price, his Civil War history, family & home. Also includes history of the Remington Navy Model revolver & numerous photos, newspaper articles & pertinent information. CONDITION: metal retains sm. amount of original blue w/ balance fading to a brown patina showing wrench marks on bbl. w/ many tiny dents on receiver. Grips have dents & chips at butt & show moderate overall wear. Good bore w/ a few spots of pitting & strong rifling. (01-17366/DS/BF). ANTIQUE. $2,500-4,000.
