Cal. 44-40. S# 2225. Bbl. 10” half rnd., half oct. w/ tall blade front sight & frame dovetailed rear having V notch. Mfg. 1892-1898; 116 units. Original chamberings were 3 rimfires & 32 S&W centerfire. Underside of bbl. forward of forend marked “44.W”. Flat under forend numbered 3544 & marked "LR"near receiver. Channel of finely checkered forend numbered 08. Left side of trigger guard tang marked 2229 near receiver; frame tang near top numbered 2229. Midpoint of frame tang marked 2225; appears 2225 is S# of frame & 2229's are matching component assembly numbers. Bbl. is an obvious replacement. 44-40 fits rear of chamber but chamber is noticeably long & straight measuring approx. 2.030” total which accepts many cartridges to include 44 Mag., 44 Spl., 44 Russian & likely 44-40 extra long; almost long enough to accept 444 Marlin. Left side of frame has appropriate markings plus “S” military proof above & to left of falling block pivot along w/ “P” near front edge of frame at midpoint. Checkered grip has knife carved “A.B.O.” on right side & deep circular depression at midpoint on left w/ additional thumb relief at top rear. CONDITION: fair overall w/ cleaned pitting throughout. Better appearing rolling block & hammer; good appearing forend w/ sm. chip at right front. Fair modified grip w/ impact marks on butt, chip at rear of base & wear at bottom edges. Very good mechanical functioning. Poor to fair bore worn w/ pitting. (01-17487/NW). ANTIQUE. $600-1,000.
