Overall length of knife: 14 1/8". Overall length in scabbard: 16". Clipped point bowie style blade w/ 2 narrow short fullers on each side. Stamped near the crossguard, “COLLINS & CO (logo) LEGITIMUS MADE IN U.S.A. No 18”. Brass crossguard. 2 Piece black composition grip secured by 5 steel rivets. Tooled brown leather scabbard embossed, “COLLINS & CO (logo) LEGITIMUS” & stamped “13”. These early style V44 knives were first produced in 1934 for flying personal in Panama & Hawaii. They were carried in the jungle bailout kit that attached to the parachute harness. The V44 remained the standard survival knife until 1942. Unissued examples are nearly nonexistent today. CONDITION: knife & scabbard show only light handling wear. (02-15021/BF). $750-1,500.
