FRONTIER MODEL MADE FOR ARMING INDIAN POLICE 1880-1881. Cal. 45-70. NSN. Bbl. 24” rnd. has carbine type front band w/ dovetailed through sight. Ladder type rear sight graduated to 1000 yds. Full length mag. tube is under bbl. Bolt action w/ manually cocking hammer has Remington markings on top of bolt. Right side of action stamped “U. S. I. D. 355”. Top of receiver ring stamped w/ an arrow at front of gas escape port & ”P” “W. W. K” (inspectors mark at rear). Both bbl. shank & left side of action stamped “HN”. There are no markings on steel trigger guard or cartridge lifter. Distinctively shaped stock of American walnut unmarked & fitted w/ crescent steel buttplate. Comb is also uniquely shaped. There are no inspectors marks present. CONDITION: very good. Metal parts retain about 40-50% of their original blue w/ evidence of some cleaning. Stock possibly sourced from a sporting rifle but has obviously been on this rifle for a very long time, retains most of what appears to be its original finish w/ lifted open grain & appropriate hand wear. It appears that a sling loop has been removed from toeline w/ 2 holes plugged. Bbl. has 2 extra dovetails, one at rear, under replaced rear sight, which does not match this rifle condition wise, but appears to be the right type. A steel bead front sight is in extra dovetail at front. Bore is very good, shiny w/ strong rifling throughout w/ scattered pitting throughout. Fewer than 500 of these interesting Western rifles were produced. (01-17485/MGM122). ANTIQUE. $2,500-3,500.
