RARE CONFEDERATE KEEN, WALKER & CO. BREECHLOADING
CARBINE. Cal. 52. NSN. This unique design brass frame "tilting breech" Confederate breechloading carbine is one of approx. 280 made by Keen, Walker & Company of Danville, Virginia, between May & September 1862, making it one of the rarest of all Confederate Carbines. Standard configuration w/ 21 1/2" bbl. marked "P" ("proved") on top of bbl. next to single block rear sight. Assembly mark "II" on the frame, breechblock, lower strap & in the stock in the top strap mortise. Solid brass frame, all other parts iron. CONDITION: very good overall. Professional conservator Jack Meyer cleaned & conserved this arm in August 1995. The bbl., bore, & buttplate still have some residual pitting, but metal is otherwise in good condition w/ overall mottled gray patina, left side of hammer face is chipped. Brass has a light mustard patina. Wood has numerous dents & scratches indicating hard use. There was a split on the right side of the lower strap mortise & another toward the rear of the mortise on the same side; both have been repaired. Brass front sight, saddle ring, & metal trigger guard strap screw are excellent restorations. Bore and breech are still protected by heavy gun oil; rest of the arm is protected by a wax coating. Mechanically fine w/ crisp right rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Atlanta History Center 1985. (01-16571/JS). ANTIQUE. $12,500-17,500.
