CARBINE CIRCA 1863. Cal. 58. S# E58. 38" overall length; iron mounted except for brass nose cap; ramrod attached w/ swivel device. 22" Rnd. bbl. marked opposite lock w/ "P" ("proved"). Serial # & cryptic "E58" appears on interior of lockplate & underside of bbl.; S# also found stamped on bottom of stock rear of trigger guard. CONDITION: very good overall. Bbl. shows old cleaning especially at breech w/ breech pitting especially at breech obscuring "CSA" proof though "P" is still visible. Gun is original & complete w/ exceptions of restored & possibly contemporary hammer screw, sling swivel, & rear sight. Remainder of metal is smooth w/ a dark gray/brown patina w/ areas of pitting especially on buttplate. Stock is sound, solid & above average for other examples w/ burnout near bolster, 2 sm. vertical wood inset repairs are seen abutting back of bbl. at tang. S# behind trigger guard is visible in outline only. Mechanically fine w/ well discerned rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Norm Flayderman; Beverly Dubose Jr. 1967, Atlanta History Center 1985. (01-16572/JS). ANTIQUE. $8,000-12,000.
