Gwalior, Jayaji Rao (1843-1886 AD), gold mohur, Burhanpur mint, in the name of Shah Alam II, AH 1264, sprig mint mark on reverse, unpublished in major sources, 11.30g.

High relief striking, Uncirculated with luster, Extremely rare.

Jayaji Rao Scindia minted a distinctive gold mohur at the Burhanpur mint in the name of Shah Alam II, the Mughal emperor. This coin, issued during the late 18th century, reflects the complex political and economic relationship between the Marathas and the Mughal Empire. Shah Alam II, who had lost most of his territories to the Marathas, was restored to the throne by the Marathas under Mahadji Scindia's leadership. The gold mohur issued in Shah Alam II's name represents both the Mughal legacy and the Maratha authority of the time, blending the symbols of the Mughal Empire with the emerging Maratha influence in northern India. This coin is an important historical artifact, symbolizing the political power dynamics of that era and the Scindia family's role in shaping the history of Gwalior and India.
