Awadh, Wajid Ali Shah (1847-1856 AD), copper ⅛ paisa, AH 1270/RY 8, Bait al-Saltanat Lakhnau Mulk Awadh Akhtarnagar mint, 1.50g. Obv: Farsi couplet Sikka zad bar Seem wa Zar az Fazl wa Tayeed Alah/Zill Haq Sultan 'Alam Wajid Ali Badshah. Rev: Coat-of-arms with number '3' in centre, mint-name and RY details around.

Good Very fine, Very rare.

The figure '3' in the center suggests a quantum of cowrie shells called 'Ganda'. Four cowries made a Ganda, thus 12 cowries corresponded to an eighth paisa. The coins of this rare type are always encountered beautifully struck, almost like the so-called 'Nazarana' style. They were perhaps a short-lived coinage issued specifically to bridge the use of non-metallic (cowries) and metallic (paisas) exchange media.
