Pre-War German Guild Side-by-Side Drilling, with Leg-O-Mutton Case, #338, 16 ga., 2-3/4" chambers over 8x57mm caliber, 26.75" barrels, extractors, blued and case hardened finish, engraved receiver with elk, deer, and rose/scroll decorations; removable bead front sight, pop-up "V"-notch rear sight activated by the tang safety, Greener type side safety for shotgun barrels, adjustable trigger for rifle barrel, Imperial German proof marks on bottom of barrels and frame, fluted horn end cap on pistol-grip hard wood stock with Monte Carlo cheekpiece, fine checkering, butt trap at bottom edge of stock for four rifle rounds, checkered horn butt cap, 7/8" sling swivels, and oval metal tag on left side of stock that reads "Major E.D. Ellis, U.S. Army". There is no maker's name on the gun, but probably a German Guild piece, built by a consortium of gunsmiths. 14" LOP to front trigger. Condition is very good, with vivid color case hardening on the action, trigger guard, forend iron, and butt trap cover. Only slight wear to the trigger guard tang in the grip area, and light wear on ends of action fences. Bottom of the trigger guard shows minor pitting on one edge, and a scratch in the protective varnish. Shotgun barrels show light pitting and thin bluing where some old rust was cleaned off on the sides and front, and light freckling of rust near the chamber end on the left side. Matte filed top ramp shows one small nick and a few light scratches. There are cocking indicators for all three barrels on top of receiver. Action is tight, seems hardly used; bores are bright on all three barrels. Wood stock shows nice figure to the grain, minor handling scratches and small dings, a few light depressions in the checkering, and light age to the original finish. Checkered horn buttplate has a few small insect nibbles and a few small dings around the edges. Brass nameplate is affixed with two small brads and shows oxidation to the surface. Includes a nice leather covered leg-o-mutton gun case with a leather handle and strap, with a similar oval name tag that reads "Major E.D. Ellis, U.S. Army" affixed to the top cap. Est.: $1,500-$2,500. (C&R)
