Nolambas of Nolambawadi, Central Karnataka, Polalachola II Nanni Nolamba (c. 969-975AD), gold punch-marked heavy gadyana of an unusual fabric and style, made in beaten gold with repousse punches, not published in any catalogue of South Indian coins, 5.76gm, height: 53.37mm, width: 53.36mm. Obv: a die-struck figure of seated Nandi, facing left, in the centre, surrounded by 11 punches of Kannada letter No. A further eight punches applied along the margin - 4 x seated Nandi facing left with sun and moon on the back, 2 x Kannada letter Shri, 1 x Ankusha or elephant goad, 1 x Kannada legend Nolamba.

Extremely fine, Exceedingly rare.

Coins of this fabric are a recent discovery in South Indian numismatics. This piece is from a small group of coins of similar fabric which are attributed to the Nolambas, Kakatiyas and other feudatories under the Chalukyas of Kalyani. They require further research and appreciation.
