Historical Context

New Order are a British rock band formed in Manchester in 1980 from the remaining members of Joy Division following the death of Ian Curtis. Peter Hook (born Peter Woodhead) is a founding member and bass guitarist, widely recognized as one of the most influential and distinctive bassists in post-punk and electronic music.

Power, Corruption & Lies (1983) was New Order's second studio album and is widely regarded as one of the defining records of the post-punk and electronic music era, marking the band's evolution away from the Joy Division sound and toward the electronic dance-influenced style that would define their subsequent career.

The album's cover — Henri Fantin-Latour's 1890 painting A Basket of Roses, presented without text on the front and with the iconic Peter Saville-designed color-coded reference chart on the right edge — is among the most instantly recognizable sleeve designs in the history of British music, conceived by graphic designer Peter Saville. The Dr. Martens x New Order x Peter Saville collaboration was announced in July 2018 and released on June 14, 2018 as an extremely limited collection reworking three seminal album covers onto the classic 1460 8-eye boot — Unknown Pleasures (Joy Division), Power, Corruption & Lies (New Order), and Technique (New Order). The collaboration was conceived with Peter Saville, who designed the original album sleeves, directly involved. For the Power, Corruption & Lies boot, the Fantin-Latour floral painting was printed onto Cristal Suede leather finished with a crackle-coat to emulate the texture of an antique painted canvas. The boots were produced in extremely limited quantities and sold out rapidly.
