Nayakas of Madurai, anonymous copper cash struck in the name of 'Shri Veera', unpublished variety in Ganesh and Mitchiner, 1.75g. Obv: representation of a man with lion's body and tail (Vyaghrapada Rishi). Rev: Kannada legend Shri Veera.

Good very fine, Rare.

Vyaghrapada was a Rishi or sage and an ardent devotee of Nataraja Shiva of Chidambaram. He had vowed to offer the freshest of flowers to Shiva, which were not even touched by honeybees. This arduous task meant scaling trees and cliffs and often caused injuries to Vyaghrapada. So Shiva conferred him the boon to have tiger's feet. Armed with this divine gift, Vyaghrapada climbed inaccessible places to pick flowers for Shiva. This numismatic depiction of Vyaghrapada is unique so far.
