Napoleon I. Endorsement and signature "Approved N" on a report presented to him by General Bertrand, 1 page, in French, 8 x 11 in., Porto Ferragio, 12 January 1815. Regarding terms of a debt payment. Bertrand (1773-1844) was with Napoleon in all his campaigns and accompanied him into exile on both Elba and St. Helena. Anything signed by Napoleon while on Elba is rare.

After he was forced to abdicate on April 11, 1814, Napoleon was sent to the island of Elba in the Mediterranean. He was given an escort of some 1000 men, a household staff and was allowed to retain his title of emperor and to rule over Elba's 110,000 population. He stayed there for 300 days before escaping to France on Feb. 26, 1815, where he rallied his forces and ruled for what became known as the Hundred Days (actually 110). After his defeat at Waterloo (June 18), he was exiled to St. Helena, off the west coast of Africa, where he remained until his death.
