Shah Jahan (1628-1658 AD) - silver rupee, Akbarabad mint, AH 1038/RY 2, struck with specially prepared dies with inscriptions in Naskhi calligraphy, unpublished so far, 11.32g. Obv: Shahada in ornate pentagonal cartouche, names and titles of Rashidoons around. Rev: full name of the emperor, AH date, RY and mintname.

Nearly Extremely fine, Unique.

The present exquisite type was produced in AH 1038 at Akbarabad and may most likely have been struck to celebrate Shah Jahan's first anniversary of his coronation. It is during this period in AH 1038 that the name of Agra was changed to Akbarabad and it is very likely that this coin may be one of the earliest examples to reflect that change. It's an outstanding example of the superb style and elegant design of the coinage produced during the early part of the reign of Shahjahan. In all probability, the dies used to strike this coin were intended for striking gold coins, although no comparable gold coin is yet known.
