Mughal potentates of late 18th century - silver rupee in the name of Shah Alam II, Najafgarh mint, AH 11XX/RY 26, unlisted in major publications, 10.37g.

Very fine, Very rare.

Najafgarh, located to the west of New Delhi, was named after Mirza Najaf Khan, the powerful Irani or 'Mughalia' noble of Shah Alam II’ court who established it as a safeguard from raids by Sikhs, Jats and Marathas. In around 1783-84, when this coin was struck, it was under the control of Afrasiyab Khan, a favourite of Mirza Najaf Khan and important member of the 'Mughalia' faction.
