Akbar (1556-1605 AD), silver square rupee, mintless and dateless type, unlisted in South Asian Coin Book First Edition but listed in new South Asian Coin Book 2013 Edition as KM A91.1, 11.35g, with Allahu Akbar on obverse and Jal Jalalahu on reverse, variety with 'Jim' of 'Jal' extended into a long stroke, floral decorative fields on both sides.

Uncirculated, Very rare in such high grade.

The type was introduced by Akbar soon after AH 990, to herald the 'timeless' Islamic Millenium, where he would be the 'Khalifah' or supreme leader. On a practical level, it helped counter the discounting of older coins by shroffs who relied on the date mentioned on the coin to apply it.
