Model 1862 U.S. Naval Cutlass, with bright 25-7/8'' wide fuller blade, marked at ricasso area with an anchor stamp, and ''U.S.N., D.R., 1862'' inspector's stamps; reverse of ricasso area is not marked, but was probably made by Ames Mfg. Co., as they were the main contractor for this model. Handle features a wooden grip covered with leather, twisted wire wrapping having been removed, as was customary with later issue of these cutlasses. Large sheet brass knuckle guard is riveted to the solid brass guard, with a brass pommel cap. There are rack numbers stamped into the quillion area of the crossguard of ''21M, 982''. Additionally, there are inspector's initials ''D.R.'' stamped into top of pommel. OAL is 31.5''. Condition is good with blade retaining most of its factory polish, showing a few edge nicks, and some small areas of heavy pitting that have been cleaned. The guard, basket, and pommel have been polished bright. Leather covering on the grip has a few scuffs and dings commensurate with age. There are remnants of the original leather blade washer. No scabbard. Est.: $500-$700.
