Gond Kingdom of Garha, Katanga, Sangram Shah, Copper Unit, 7.89g, Obv: Lion with forepaw raised facing left within a rectangle, Devnagari legend “Shri Hariharaya Namah” followed by a last line, which is truncated, Rev: Legend “Shri Sangrama Sahi” inscribed in Telugu (upper half) and in Devnagari lower half. Extremely fine, exceedingly rare.
Sangram Shah was a ruler of the Rajgond dynasty which extended its sway over large parts of land known as Gondwana in central India. His original name was Aman Das but after conquering 52 forts he later renamed himself ‘Sangram Shah’. He claimed descent from the family of Ravana, the mythical king of Sri Lanka and was well-known as a patron of arts and literature. His eldest son, Dalpat Shah, married Rani Durgawati who fought bravely with Emperor Akbar.
