Western Chalukyas of Kalyani - gold punch-marked gadyana of Someshvara II Bhuvanekamalla (c.1068-1076 AD), of 'temple' type, unpublished so far, 4.46g. Obv: In centre, an elaborate punch consisting of an architectural temple motif, with Kannada letter Shri beset in the finial (Kalasha) and Kannada legend Bhuvane / ka Malla in two lines in the sanctum. The central punch is surrounded by eight punches of a stylized scroll-like device. Rev: Blank.

Extremely fine, Exceedingly rare.

The reign of Someshvara II was plagued with two problems - the ambitions of his brother Vikramaditya VI to become the emperor and an invasion by the Cholas. Eventually, Vikramaditya managed to depose Someshvara. Coins of this monumental 'temple' type were also struck by Jayasimha II, the predecessor of Someshvara II; however this is the first time a coin issued by Somshvara II in such a type has come to light.
