Vijayanagar Empire, late phase as Kings of Chandragiri/Penukonda - gold fanam, feudatory issue in the name of Venkatapati Raya (c.1600-1700 AD), not listed in MCSI, 0.36g. Obv: Vadakalai Nāmam (symbol of 'Vadakalai’ Vaishnavite school) on a pedestal, flanked by Sankha and Chakra. Rev: crude traces of a Tamil/Telugu legend.

Extremely fine, Rare.

The followers of Vadakalai school believe that Vishnu's consort, Lakshmi, is indistinguishable from Vishnu. They believe that the tilaka (urdhva pundra) mark on the forehead symbolizes Vishnu's right foot. It is their belief therefore that this mark also symbolizes Lakshmi.
