Medieval India: Rashtrakutas?, uninscribed coin in alloyed copper, 'Central Maharashtra' region, unpublished in major sources, 2.13g. Obv: Frontal depiction of anthropoid fertility goddess (Lajjagauri) without head, but with prominent breasts and legs spread wide in a 'birthing' posture. Rev: Conch shell with an animal-like figure (snake?) emanating from it, partly seen.

Extremely fine, Extremely rare.

The attribution of the coin to the Rashtrakutas may be substantiated from its fabric and weight, after comparing with similar coins bearing the names of early Rashtrakuta rulers. The depiction of Lajjagauri is unique to this series and perhaps the only unequivocal depiction of the icon on Indian coins known to date.
