Ranas of Mewar - copper unit of Maharana Kumbhakarna a.k.a. Kumbha (1433-1468 AD), struck at Kumbhalgarh, dated VS 1512, unlisted in major catalogues, 11.90g. Obv: Letter Shri in double rectangle in centre; Devanagari legend Shri Ekalingasya Prasadata Sa 1512 ('By the blessings of Ekalinga') in exergue. Rev: Devanagari legend in four lines Shri Kumbhala/Meru Maha/Rana Shri Ku/bhakarnasya.

Good very fine, Extremely rare.

An exceptional specimen, this coin is the first copper unit of Rana Kumbha struck on a round flan, and so far unique, all other known examples being of rectangular shape. It also lacks the sword emblem seen on the other known full units. It comes closest in type to a half unit struck in our auction 40 (lot 151) but that coin was also of a rectangular shape. Maharana Kumbha is known for his bravery and statesmanship as the ruler of the resurgent kingdom of Mewar and the patron of many landmark monuments such as the Kirti Stambha in the fort of Chittaurgarh.
