Civil War Maynard Military Issue 2nd Model Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine, #23544, .50 cal., blued 20'' part round-part octagonal barrel with dovetailed blade front and folding-leaf rear sights, marked only ''S'' on left flat; case hardened frame with front hinge, central hammer and nipple, and left-side sling bar and ring, is marked with the Maynard name and two 1851-59 patent dates on left, ''Manufactured by/Mass. Arms Co/Chicopee Falls'' on right, and ''1865'' on lower tang; serpentine operating lever raises hinged barrel for loading prepared cartridges; oil-stained walnut buttstock has ''SWP'' (Samuel W. Porter) and ''JM'' (John Maggs or Maj. Julian Mcallister) inspector's cartouches at left wrist and a steel rifle buttplate. Mfg'd ca. 1863-65. Condition is excellent. Barrel retains approx. 93% military blue (with a right-side scratch and scattered very minor marks; receiver and lever with mottled case coloring and occasional discoloration; buttplate a dull blue-brown. Stock is smooth and solid, with sharp inspector's marks, nice color, grain and finish. Action is strong; bore is brilliant with deep rifling. Est.: $1,000-$2,000. (Antique)
