Maghas in Central India/Chattisgarh, potin unit of Vasishthiputra Arjuna (c.200-250 AD), unreported in any catalogue and unique so far, 4.42g. Obv: seated Nandi in centre; Brahmi legend from 6 o'clock Rajño Vasishthiputrasya Arjunasya anticlockwise around. Rev: three-arched hill.

Extremely fine, Unique so far.

The Maghas succeeded the Bodhis and the Senas in Central India around 200AD. Very little is known about them but they appear to have captured the area around Kaushambi later, as evident from their coins. The attribution of this coin to the Maghas is as yet tentative but most plausible. The choice of Sanskrit for its inscription suggests an advanced Classical language culture that gradually took hold in the aftermath of the Satavahanas.
