Madras Presidency, Silver 4 Annas (FOUR.ANNAS Variety), 1808 AD, Edge: Oblique Milling, Obv: value in Persian chahar Anna rupia within a circle, on the garter value in English FOUR. ANNAS Rev: value in Telugu in two lines separated by a bead surrounded by a ribbon, the ends of which are separated by a star, on the ribbon is the value in Tamil, 2.90g, 16.50mm, (Stevens # 3.353/ PR # 306), centrally struck, good quality, VF-XF, Exceedingly Rare.
Note: Despite being struck on the rupee standard, the 4 and 2 Annas differ from the fractions of the Madras Arkat rupee in style. They were introduced in order to relieve the pressure on copper coins in the Circars, and the entire minting process was transferred to Masulipatam.
